School Referenda in Wisconsin-Spring 2020 Election Update

By Jeffrey Schmidt

In recent years, Wisconsin voters have approved school district spending referenda in record numbers. Results for the spring 2020 vote shows a similar trend and our latest Focus provides updated numbers.

This interactive dashboard provides more school referenda figures, including district by district data.

The tool below displays statewide and school district referenda data from 1993 through the April 2020 election results. There are three types: debt referenda are for capital expenses such as a new building; non-recurring are for increasing the district’s revenues beyond state caps for a set period, typically several years; and recurring are for districts seeking to exceed their revenue limits permanently. Statewide, school districts are asking for more funding from voters. Since the end of the Great Recession, funds requested and approved via referenda have increased.
